Motion text

That this House is dismayed to learn that Mr Roger Ball, a former member of the now disbanded and discredited West Midlands Serious Crimes Squad, is about to become Mayor of Leek; recalls that Mr Ball is one of the officers who took part in the interrogations of the six men convicted of the Birmingham pub bombings which are widely believed to have resulted in fabricated confessions; in particular recalls that Mr Ball is alleged to have participated in the assaults on one of the six men, John Walker, and subsequently to have given perjured evidence; further recalls that in 1983 Mr Ball was alleged to have taken part in the harrassment of Police Cadet Adrian Dart, after Mr Dart had given evidence which resulted in three police officers being jailed for assaulting a suspect with a view to obtaining a confession; believes that the elevation of Mr Ball will bring discredit upon the municipality of Leek; and urges the councillors and citizens of Leek to reconsider his appointment.
