Motion text

That this House calls on the Government to reverse its mean-fisted policy on student grants and allow students to live on a decent income; notes that students have to survive on an income that is lower than that of people claiming income support and its accompanying benefits; deplores the present system whereby students are obliged to take out student loans, because of the miserly level of grants, leaving people in a state of debt for many years, with stringent additions to income tax; and calls on the Government to recognise that students are the lifeblood of the country's future and to institute policies that provide for the well-being of all people studying in further and higher education.
