EDM (Early Day Motion) 846: tabled on 20 March 1995

Tabled in the 1994-95 session.

Motion text

That this House welcomes the development of crash tests for frontal impact (offset deformable barrier) and side impact (Barrier height of 300mm); recognises that these realistic crash tests could achieve a reduction of 90,000 serious injuries and deaths in the European Union, 9,000 of which would occur in the United Kingdom; deeply regrets that the European Commission has proposed draft Directives for frontal and side impact which do not introduce these new realistic test standards; notes that the European Commission proposed tests for frontal impact (an angled barrier) and side impact (barrier height of 260mm) are not supported by their own expert research; is concerned that these weaker test standards will not provide the same casualty reduction potential as the more realistic tests now available; and therefore, urges Her Majesty's Government to propose amendments to the draft Directives to introduce the realistic test standards now available at the earliest possible date and to reject the frontal and side impact tests currently included in the draft Directives.
