Motion text

That this House, whilst condemning the deplorable conduct of Eric Cantona at Crystal Palace recently, believes nonetheless the immediate response of his club, Manchester United, to be wholly inappropriate; considers that this rush to judgement was the result of a hysterical campaign by certain sections of the media, not least by former players now described as soccer pundits; asserts that due to this, no plea of mitigation has been possible, when clearly Mr Cantona was the target of appalling abuse; is appalled at the Football Association appears to be party to the summary punishment meted out on this occasion; notes that in other cases, notably, ones concerning alleged match fixing and alleged illegal payments, the FA has proceeded in a dilatory manner, whilst the accused have been allowed to continue to play and manage; notwithstanding, notes that the FA quite properly acted with understanding and compassion in the case of Paul Merson of Arsenal, who after a period of treatment will soon be playing again; demands the same consideration for Eric Cantona; and, after all mitigating circumstances have been taken into account believes he should be allowed an early resumption of his playing career, certainly before the end of the current season.
