Suggested Amendment

"at end add `and strongly deplores the way Ministers and Tory backbenchers voted down by 21 votes on 16th January 1987 the second reading of the Bill that would have exempted pensioners from the television licence fee and moreover the refusal by Ministers to offer any compromise at all and then a year later actually amending legislation that made the existing restrictive concessionary scheme much more limited in scope.'."

Original Motion Text

That this House recognises the valuable contribution made to the well-being of the United Kingdom over many years by senior citizens; furthermore notes that many of Britain's pensioners will find television licences priced at ú84.50 an expensive price to pay; and, therefore, calls upon the Government to exempt pensioners from the television licence fee in the coming Budget.
