EDM (Early Day Motion) 347: tabled on 29 January 1996

Motion text

That this House notes that the British Polio Fellowship is the only national charity caring for those disabled by polio and for whom the vaccine came too late; recognises that 1996 has been designated as Polio Awareness Year as it will be 40 years since the introduction of the vaccine; draws attention to the fact that many of those who caught polio during the endemic years are now suffering from additional symptoms including muscle pain, fatigue and difficulty with breathing under the syndrome known as the Late Effects of Polio; acknowledges that there are approximately 30,000 polio survivors living in this country whose needs are unique and varied; notes that during 1996 events are being planned to highlight their plight and to raise essential funds to ensure that their needs are met well into the next century; and both fully supports the work of the British Polio Fellowship and sends good wishes for the success of their plans for Polio Awareness Year 1996.
