Motion text

That this House welcomes the declaration of independence by the Parliament of Lithuania; urges President Gorbachev to accept the right of nations currently within the Soviet Union to claim full self-determination; calls on nation states within Western Europe and the European Community to extend practical support to the people and Government of Lithuania in their struggle for the restoration of national rights; and calls on the British Government to officially recognise Lithuania as a self-governing republic.

At end add 'and recognises that each of the Baltic States was forcibly assimilated into the Soviet Union against their wishes, that the present use of intimidation and sabre rattling by the USSR is deplorable; and commends the Lithuanians for their steadfastness and courage.'
