Motion text

That this House welcomes the United Nations General Assembly's reaffirmation on 2nd November of the need to end the United States of America's financial and commercial blockade of Cuba by 117 votes to 3 with 38 abstentions (including the United Kingdom Government) which represents an even greater degree of support for Cuba's right to national sovereignty that the three previous years' resolutions on the same topic; requests the United Kingdom Government to urge the United States of America to comply fully with the United Nations resolution by ending its blockade and normalising its economic and diplomatic relations with Cuba and make representations to President Clinton that he oppose the Helms/Burton Bill; and, while welcoming the recent Government-led trade delegations to Cuba, calls upon Her Majesty's Government to take further steps both domestically and within the European Union to promote actively trade and aid programmes with Cuba including the issuing of export credit guarantees.
