SAFETY AND THE PRIVATISATION OF COAL

Motion text

That this House is gravely concerned at the dramatic rise in the number of major accidents in the coal mining industry which reinforces fears that the established health and safety culture has been seriously weakened since the industry was sold off; notes the significant increase in the number of underground hours worked since privatisation which exposes miners to increased dust and noise levels as well as greater fatique; further notes that the Health and Safety Executive does not record accident rates for the individual companies; and calls on Her Majesty's Government to instruct it to compile rates per 100,000 manshifts for all companies operating mines which were previously publicly owned and to include companies which do sub-contract work in those mines so that the safety performance of each company can be monitored and used as a basis to improve the welfare of the entire mining workforce.
