BRAZILIAN MAHOGANY AND APPENDIX II OF CITES

Motion text

That this House expresses its continued grave concern at the over-exploitation of Brazilian mahogany (Swietenia macrophylla), the environmental and social devastation which accompanies it, the illegal activities associated with the trade and the consequential threat to the long-term survival of the species; notes that although mahogany imports have dropped significantly over the past five years the United Kingdom remains the world's second largest importer of the wood and is therefore a contributor to the problem; welcomes the fact that in 1994 the British Government supported the listing of Brazilian mahogany under Appendix II of the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES), but notes that this proposal was narrowly out-voted; and calls upon the Government to propose at the next Convention of Parties the listing of Brazilian mahogany under Appendix II of CITES which would oblige exporting countries to ensure that the wood is legally and sustainably sourced.
