Motion text

That this House welcomes the Government's decision to vote with its 14 partners to designate 1997 European Year Against Racism and to agree in principle to the setting up of the European monitoring centre on racism as recommended by the Kahn Commission; calls on the Government to give full recognition to the Europe-wide threat constituted by racism and xenophobia, emphasising that Britain aims to take a leading role in the field of race relations; and urges the government to support the proposal to incorporate in the revised Treaty of European Union provisions banning discrimination, particularly on the grounds of race and religion.
