Suggested amendment

leave out from `House' to end and add `congratulates Classic FM for maintaining the public service broadcasting tradition of political impartiality in its news bulletins; expresses astonishment that the honourable Members for Dartford and Wyre quareel with Classic FM's statement that "the Barnsey East by-election result was a Conservative defeat" given that the Labour candidate in this election won 76 per cent. of the popular vote while the Conservative candidate took only seven per cent. of the vote; and reminds all honourable Members that the basic rules of the British electoral system ensure that they will be defeated at the forthcoming general election if the receive fewer votes than another candidate in their constituency.'.

Original motion text

That this House whilst noting the persistent and consistent pro-Labour bias as shown in regular news bulletins broadcast by Classic FM, expresses its astonishment at the statement made last Friday morning, 13th December 1996, that the Barnsley East by-election result was a Conservativedefeat; and urges the radio station to adopt an impartial line, to report the facts not opinion and to drop 'Labour-speak' forthwith.
