Motion text

That this House is appalled by the further evidence of discrimination against, and brutal repression of, its ethnic minorities and particularly against the Karenni people by the State Law and Order Restoration Council (SLORC) of Burma; notes that the evidence indicates a policy of ethnic cleansing of the Karenni people by forced relocations from their homeland of some 70,000-80,000 into camps over the past three months, military attacks on villages and poisoning of water supplies; and calls upon Her Majesty's Government to press the SLORC, which is currently promoting Burma, Year of the Tourist, to allow independent observers access to all areas to monitor human rights and assess the priorities for the supply of humanitarian aid and to encourage the Thai Government further to increase security at the border camps to protect refugees from SLORC attacks.
