Motion text

That this House acknowledges the tremendous contribution that nurses have made to the NHS since its creation over 50 years ago; notes that the NHS is facing its worst nurse shortage for a quarter of a century with over 8,000 nurse vacancies and 8 out of 10 trusts reporting problems recruiting nurses; recognises that the Government's plans to modernise the NHS and cut waiting lists cannot be achieved without adequate nursing staff; and urges the Government to bear these facts in mind when deciding on the pay award for nurses at the outcome of the Pay Review deliberations.

After a motion has been tabled, other Members can table amendments to it. Amendments to this motion are shown below.

NURSES IN THE HEALTH SERVICE (Amendment 1)
leave out from 'Government' to end and add 'to pay nurses in the coming award round at least the prevailing headline increase in the real cost of living, rather than the Chancellor's target inflation rate of 2.5 per cent., which would give nurses a real terms pay cut; and to immediately rule out staging the award.'.
