Motion text

That this House believes that the charges in Indonesia following the resignation of former President Suharto provide a real opportunity for the resolution of the long-standing problem of East Timor, which has caused so much suffering to the people there; notes that international pressure for a just solution to the problem is mounting; is disappointed that President Habibie's offer to grant special status to the territory within the Republic of Indonesia does not satisfy the right of the East Timorese people to self-determination in accordance with international law and United Nations resolutions; condemns the use of violence by Indonesian troops against East Timorese students demonstrating at the Foreign Ministry in Jakarta on 12th June; urges Her Majesty's Government to call upon the Government of Indonesia to desist from further violence against East Timorese demonstrators, to release without delay Xanana Gusmao, leader of the East Timorese resistance, and all other political prisoners, to enter into serious negotiations with Xanana Gusmao about the future of East Timor and about the holding of a referendum under UN auspices on East Timor's further status and to withdraw all its troops from the territory; and further calls upon Her Majesty's Government to ensure that the proposed European Union Ambassadorial Troika mission visits East Timor without further delay.
