Motion text

That this House notes that the cost of raising the basic pension to £75 per week would be £3 billion; notes that the Government's Actuary estimate (Cm 4199) for the balance on the National Insurance Fund at the end of the year 1999-2000 will be £5.9 billion more than the Actuary considers necessary; and urges that part of the unneeded surplus should be used to provide a genuine guaranteed minimum income for pensioners without a means test.
