JAPANESE WHALING

EDM (Early Day Motion) 916: tabled on 03 July 2000

Tabled in the 1999-00 session.

This motion has been signed by 147 Members. It has not yet had any amendments submitted.

Motion text

That this House condemns plans by the Government of Japan to expand its programme of so-called scientific whaling to include Bryde's and sperm whales in addition to minke whales; regrets that Japan has ignored requests from the International Whaling Commission to stop its whaling; notes that the IWC has said that it does not need the data obtained from Japan's scientific whaling; is further deeply concerned that Japan is killing whales in the Southern Ocean despite the decision in 1994 to declare this area a whale sanctuary; and respectfully calls on the Government of Japan to withdraw this proposal and to stop its whaling activities.
