SLAVERY IN GHANA
EDM #198
Tabled 15 December 1999
1999-00 Session
That this House is appalled by the enslavement of over 5,000 people in Ghana, who are given to traditional shrines as slaves for past offences allegedly committed by family members; notes that most of the slaves are unpaid female farm labourers working for the shrine priests, and are often raped and abused; and calls upon the Government of Ghana to enforce the law to end this slavery as a matter of urgency and to ensure that those rescued from bondage are cared for and rehabilitated.
