Hong Kong Ivory Stocks
EDM #306
Tabled 15 January 1990
1989-90 Session
That this House calls upon Her Majesty's Government not to enter a reservation by the deadline on 18th January on behalf of Hong Kong to allow the current ivory stockpile of 670 tons in the Crown Colony, representing some 100,000 elephants, to be placed on the world market; believes that if the Hong Kong ivory is released it will make a total nonsense of and seriously undermine the decision by the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species to effect a world-wide ivory trade ban; applauds the decision of the Kenyan government publicly to destroy ivory seized from poachers; and calls upon the British Government to do the same in respect of the Hong Kong stockpile.
