Motion text

That this House is appalled at the Government's decision to allow Hong Kong to dispose of approximately 600 tons of elephant ivory during the first six months of the world-wide ban on ivory trading; believes that the decision taken by the Foreign and Commonwealth Office was based on political considerations rather than the advice of conservation experts and the need to protect the African elephant; considers that Government action has totally undermined the ivory ban and will lead to an upsurge in the slaughter of elephants and the trade in illegally obtained ivory; and calls upon the Government to rescind the reservation and destroy all current Hong Kong ivory stocks.
