Motion text

That this House welcomes the intention of film producer Steven Spielberg to create a television series recreating the life and battles of King Arthur, including British actors in the production; notes the success of the series 'Band of Brothers' filmed in England; recognises the historical and mythological connections of King Arthur with Somerset, the identification of Camelot with Cadbury Castle and of the Isle of Avalon with Glastonbury; believes the beautiful and unspoilt countryside of Somerset would therefore be an ideal location for filming such a series; and calls on the Department of Culture, Media and Sport to do everything possible to attract the production to Britain and to support the rural economy.

after 'series;' insert 'but recognises the prior and authenticated link with Camelford, Tintagel Castle, Slaughterbridge and St Michael's Mount in Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly; urges that this should be the principle location for any faithful attempt to depict the full mystery and majesty of the Arthurian Legend;'.

leave out from 'England' to end and add 'acknowledges that the location of Camelot is in Caerleon in the City of Newport, as recorded in the Mabinogion, in the History of Kings by Geoffrey of Monmouth in 1140 and the Chronicler Mace in 1155; notes that this was confirmed in modern times by the funding of the excavation of Arthur's Round Table in Caerleon in 1928 by the Loyal Knights of the Round Table of America; and urges the dismissal of spurious claims on the location of Camelot by Steven Spielberg who will discover perfectly authentic locations for his film in the unique reenscape, the beautiful Usk Valley, in the City of Newport and the nearby expanse of the Gwent tundra.'.

leave out from 'with' to end and add 'Wessex, and deplores any attempt to rewrite history or to create a bogus entity stretching from the Isles of Scilly to Gloucestershire and Wiltshire, masquerading as an English region which neither King Arthur nor his knights of the Round Table would recognise.'.

at end add 'although notwithstanding any of the above accepts that it is probably all a myth and that the county of Devonshire would be as good as anywhere, if not better, given the quality and diversity of locations for the filming of such a series.'.

leave out from 'production' to end and add 'notes the conclusions of the book, The Keys to Avalon: the True Location of Arthur's Kingdom Revealed, by historians Steve Blake and Scott Lloyd in which they believe that Arthur's Cornish origins are derived from the mistranslation of Middle Welsh placenames by Geoffrey of Monmouth given to him by another dubious source; and further notes Blake and Lloyd's establishment of a clear link between the Vale of Llangollen and King Arthur's Quest for the Holy Grail.'.
