Motion text

That this House notes that the letter from the Minister for Rural Affairs on 21st March to honourable Members falls far short of an apology for the erroneous information about parish councils that he placed in the Library; further notes the concern of hard working parish councillors regarding Government interference; believes that Government policy threatens the viability of parish councils; and calls on the minister to issue a public apology to parish councillors and to stop interfering in their affairs.

leave out from 'Members' to end and add 'accepts that the designation of parish councils by the Countryside Agency was a lapse in judgement though its true meaning has been mischievously misinterpreted; further notes the unprecedented growth in the number of parish and town councils that this Government has encouraged, and the many initiatives such as quality parish councils, rural transport councils and additional funding that has followed demonstrating the continuing belief in this important layer of local democracy,
