Motion text

That this House believes that community representatives involved in regeneration programmes should be adequately compensated for their time, effort and expertise; notes the injustice of expecting voluntary and unpaid involvement from members of Britain's poorest and most marginalised communities, while compensation is available for members of local authorities and non-departmental public bodies; welcomes and applauds the Just Rewards campaign by New Start magazine to draw attention to this issue; and calls on the Government urgently to raise benefit disregards so that claimants are not penalised for community involvement, implement a fair scale of payments for participation at board level in regeneration schemes and introduce discretionary grants for community involvement.
