Motion text

That this House congratulates Mr Nick Cheshire, consultant vascular surgeon at St Mary's Hospital, London and his team on winning the prestigious Science Prize of the International Society of Endovascular Specialists for his pioneering work on stroke prevention; recognises that the prize is particularly timely due to it being the 50th anniversary of the world's first operation to help patients at risk of stroke, which was performed by Mr Felix Eastcott and also carried out at St Mary's Hospital; also recognises the ground-breaking work done by UK medical staff, researchers and charities in this area; further recognises that over 130,000 people in the UK will suffer the condition this year, 10,000 of whom will be under the age of 55 years; and calls on the Government to acknowledge not only the role of vascular surgeons, but also of interventional radiologists, who perform potentially life-saving less-invasive treatments and the role of allied professionals that prevent stroke and peripheral vascular disorders.
