Motion text

That this House welcomes the BBC's Police Protecting Children series which began broadcasting on BBC2 on 23rd March; notes that the programmes are the result of 18 months filming by the team behind the award-winning documentary The Hunt for Britain's Paedophiles and give a unique insight into the world of a new major investigation team set up to investigate serious crimes against children including neglect, cruelty, shaken babies, rape and murder; notes that in the last 20 years, there has been a massive increase in crimes involving images of children being sexually abused and that the success of the internet is generating a huge workload for the police investigating paedophilia; notes that this is a dark and difficult subject that needs to be confronted; and congratulates the producers for raising the difficulties and challenges faced in this brave, thought-provoking and important documentary series.

BBC'S POLICE PROTECTING CHILDREN SERIES (Amendment 1)
Line 11, at the end add, 'while recognising that an effective response to the sexual abuse of children and a crucial element of a thorough child protection system requires the management of offenders by excellent work by all agencies represented on Multi Agency Protection Panels, community based programmes to assist offenders and potential offenders to take responsibility for addressing their offending behaviour and improved investment to ensure that appropriate resources are available to all communities; and recognises that this all needs to be based on an improved public understanding helping to move on from revulsion and incomprehension to accepting that this is a problem which must and which can be properly tackled.'
