Motion text

That this House notes that the UK sent 77 per cent. of its waste to landfill in 2001-02; and that the quantity of municipal waste going to landfill increased in quantity from 22.1 million tonnes to 22.3 million tonnes between 2000-01 and 2001-02; recognises that the EU Landfill Directive requires a reduction in landfill waste of 25 per cent. of 1995 levels by 2010; further notes that the Government's Strategy Unit report, Waste Not, Want Not, predicted that, on current trends, the volume of waste generated would be double the 1995 level by 2010; and calls on the Government to take substantive measures to reverse this regrettable increase in waste going to landfill through waste minimisation and recycling.
