CLEVELAND FUELS LTD'S PROPOSAL FOR INCINERATOR AT RENFREW
EDM #1182
Tabled 23 July 1991
1990-91 Session
That this House congratulates the Clydeside Against Pollution Group on its thorough, reasonable and determined campaign against the proposal by Cleveland Fuels Ltd to develop an incinerator at Renfrew; notes that more than 14,000 people have objected to this proposal on planning, environmental, economic and social grounds; congratulates Renfrew District Council for insisting that the company should seek planning permission from the elected planning committee so that these objections may be properly and publicly considered; condemns Cleveland Fuels Ltd for attempting to ride rough-shod over normal planning procedures; deplores its attempt to intimidate the elected representatives of the communities affected by buying advertising space in a Scottish newspaper to criticise their stance in support of the people they represent; assures them that this tactic will not work; and calls upon Cleveland Fuels Ltd, even at this late stage, to either withdraw its proposal or make it subject to proper, democratic, public determination.
