Motion text

That this House condemns the fact that since 1995 there have been 26 abortions performed for cleft palate or lip; believes that these eugenic abortions contravene section 1(1)(d) of the Abortion Act 1967 (as amended); notes the assertion of the honourable Member for Aberdeen Central, 21st June 1990, Official Report, c1187 that section 1(1)(d) would never authorise abortion for cleft palate or lip; further notes that in making this inaccurate assertion he was supported by the present Solicitor General, the Right honourable Member for Camberwell and Peckham; congratulates Joanna Jepson for her courage in bringing eugenic abortion to public attention; and calls upon the Government to review the application of section 1(1)(d) of the Abortion Act 1967 (as amended) as a matter of urgency in order to end the scandal of eugenic abortion.
