That this House welcomes the constructive action of John Bowis OBE, a member of the European Parliament's Environment Committee; in tabling a series of amendments to legislation on health claims which is currently under scrutiny by that Committee; notes that the amendments would provide a potential solution to the long-running disputes over the implications of the Food Supplements Directive for the United Kingdom health products sector; further notes that if accepted the amendments would allow member states to permit onto their market safe and popular products which would otherwise by banned by the unnecessarily restrictive terms of the Food Supplements Directive, but would not oblige any other member state to do so if it did not wish; and urges the to support these amendments in Council and to instruct the Food Standards Agency to circulate an authoritative brief to MEPs on the Committee encouraging them to support the amendments in the forthcoming vote.
