Motion text

That this House supports the Prime Minister and the Government in their non acceptance of the Draft Treaty on Political and Economic Union recently issued by the Luxembourg Presidency of the Council of Ministers and now in the Library, including (a) the irrevocable fixing of exchange rates with a single currency, Article (3A), (b) a Central Bank with majority voting Article 4A, (c) supranational law-making for the European Parliament, Part 5 and (d) a common foreign and security policy Articles H to K; and believes that the ultimate power of decision over such matters must remain with the Westminster Parliament.

DRAFT TREATY ON POLITICAL AND ECONOMIC UNION (Amendment 1)
Leave out from 'House' to end and add 'believes that the best interests of every British citizen lies clearly in the development of a democratic federal Europe; accepts that this objective can only be achieved by agreement on political, economic and monetary union; regrets that certain Conservative honourable Members continue to cling to outdated illusions of national sovereignty damaging to the Country's future; calls on Her Majesty's Government to pursue negotiations with Britain's Community partners which will provide British industry with economic stability through a central bank and a common currency and British citizens with an effective voice and influence in a strengthened European Parliament elected fairly.'.
