Motion text

That this House recognises the importance of teaching children to swim for reasons of fitness, health and especially for safety; notes the 1990 Secondary Heads Association Survey which reveals that less than half of pupils aged 11 to 15 years have any swimming lessons on their curriculum; notes the National Curriculum Working Group on Physical Education's interim report which says that swimming is too important to leave to chance and should be an entitlement under the National Curriculum; and welcomes the Group's firm recommendation that all children should learn to swim during the primary years.
