Motion text

That this House is concerned about the security of supply of electricity in the medium term and about the failure of the Government's strategy to reduce carbon dioxide emissions; is further concerned that the UK's indigenous oil and gas supplies are running down and that the UK is forecast to be a net importer of gas from 2006, that any increase in conventional coal-fired generation will have significant environmental consequences, that the present renewables target, which is 4.9 per cent. this year, is not being met, that the decommissioning of nuclear power stations will begin in 2008, giving rise to significant shortfalls in supplies of electricity in the foreseeable future, and yet the Government refuses to make a decision on the role of nuclear power; and calls upon the Government to stop stalling and to set out a timetable for action that will enable the UK to reconcile economic and environmental objectives and will enable the electricity supply industry to invest in future electricity supplies.
