PRIME MINISTER AND MINISTERIAL INTERVENTION ON FOOD SUPPLEMENTS LEGISLATION

EDM (Early Day Motion) 246: tabled on 06 June 2005

Motion text

That this House welcomes the acknowledgement by the Prime Minister in his speech of 26th May to the Institute of Public Policy Research that the European Union often seeks to `regulate too heavily without sufficient cause' and that the `EU vitamins directive is a good example' of legislation that is `wholly out of proportion to the risks run'; expresses its profound concern that the Government and the Food Standards Agency still have no strategy for bringing about change to this legislation; urges the Prime Minister personally to intervene to ensure that his understandable concerns lead to ministerial intervention and action to save the thousands of safe and popular food supplements whose removal from the market remains threatened in the near future; and believes that a golden opportunity to achieve the necessary changes is afforded by the forthcoming UK Presidency of the European Union and the likelihood that the Food Supplements Directive will need to be rewritten, at least in part, following a ruling of the European Court of Justice expected in July.
