BIOFUELS AS A RENEWABLE TRANSPORT FUEL

EDM (Early Day Motion) 338: tabled on 15 June 2005

Tabled in the 2005-06 session.

This motion has been signed by 187 Members. It has not yet had any amendments submitted.

Motion text

That this House believes biofuels have an important role to play in reducing UK carbon emissions from transport and tackling climate change; congratulates the supporters of the Bioethanol Declaration calling for measures to promote greater use of biofuels; welcomes the partnership between British Sugar and the Transport and General Workers Union, to support biofuels and create sustainable and lasting employment; recognises that bioethanol can be easily blended with petrol for use in existing vehicles without any modifications to engines or changes in the way that consumers purchase fuel; notes that bioethanol production based on the sustainable use of UK crops could support as many as 10,000 jobs, and in future provide a pathway to renewable hydrogen technology; and calls on the Government to implement the Renewable Transport Fuels Obligation under the Energy Act 2004 so that the UK can realise the opportunities provided by the use of biofuels.
