Motion text

That this House rejects the new European Commission document (COM (2005) 172) which provides with the agreement of Her Majesty's Government that the Commission will ensure that all its legislative proposals will be drawn up to be in compliance with the Charter of Fundamental Rights although this Charter is not law and the European Constitution which included the Charter has been defeated; notes that the Government has stated that the Charter is clearer and more comprehensive than the European Convention on Human Rights; and urges the Government, as President of the EU, and the House to take all urgent steps to reject the proposal in the document which as and when implemented through EU legislation and then brought before this House would bring the Charter of Fundamental Rights fully into effect as the law of the United Kingdom through the European Community Act 1972 with incalculable and damaging consequences to its citizens.
