Motion text

That this House notes with concern that a shopworker is verbally abused every minute of every working day, as reported by the Union of Shop, Distributive and Allied Workers (Usdaw); is appalled by the high level of verbal abuse that shopworkers endure; is concerned that verbal abuse is on the increase, as reported by the British Retail Consortium's Annual Retail Crime Survey; welcomes Usdaw's Respect for Shopworkers Day on 12th July, which seeks to raise public awareness of the suffering caused to shopworkers by verbal abuse; and calls on the police, local authorities and retail employers to ensure that those who threaten, abuse or are violent to shopworkers are brought to justice and given the penalties they deserve.
