Motion text

That this House congratulates the British Academy of Composers and Songwriters on organising a spectacular celebration of British and international songwriting talent at the Ivor Novello awards; recognises the success of British songwriting at home and abroad; notes in particular that UK songwriters such as Amy Winehouse, Corinne Bailey Rae and the Arctic Monkeys are continuing the tradition of success in the US album charts that the Beatles and Elton John have represented since the 1960s; further notes the role music plays in the social and cultural lives of the population; states unequivocally its firm view that musical talent should be respected and rewarded through an acknowledgement of the importance of copyright in underpinning creative endeavour and investment; and calls on the Government and industry to work together ahead of the expected implementation of the Gowers Report and the Green Paper on the creative industries to ensure that the creativity for which British songwriters and composers are renowned does not go unrewarded.
