Motion text

That this House condemns the proposals by the Liberal Democrat Group on Cornwall County Council for re-organising and so reducing the effectiveness of fire-service cover; strongly commends the excellent fire service personnel; notes the grave concerns of people in Newquay about the recent tragic fire at the Penhallow Hotel and the ability of the fire service to respond; further notes with great concern plans to now remove 24 hour whole-time cover in Falmouth and Camborne; and calls on the Liberal Democrat-run county council to listen to local people and use the available resources to prioritise front line services.

FIRE AND RESCUE IN CORNWALL (Amendment 1)
leave out from `House' to end and insert `commends the excellent work of full time and retained fire service personnel in Cornwall; welcomes the thorough inquiry into the Penhallow fire and the decision that no changes will be made to fire cover until the full circumstances are known; notes with concern the historic inadequate funding from successive Conservative and Labour Governments, which has forced the local authority to consider downgrading Falmouth and Camborne stations to day manned only; further notes that Conservative proposals for fire cover in Cornwall make no mention of which local services they would cut to fund their plans; and urges the Government to improve the funding of Cornwall's fire service, bearing in mind the unique geographical and seasonal pressures on fire services in the county.'.
