Motion text

That this House welcomes Childhood Cancer Awareness Month in December 2008, highlighting the current inequity in vital community care and support services for children and young people with cancer; notes that a survey by children's cancer charity CLIC Sargent found that 97 per cent. of children and young people with cancer say that it is important for them to be able to return home during their treatment, but nearly half of parents say they do not get the support they need to care when their child is at home; further notes that children and young people say that cancer is about more than their illness; expresses concern at findings that about half the children and young people with cancer who want help in keeping up with their education, such as accessing home tutoring, are not receiving it, or find it insufficient; recognises the need to help children and young people and their families keep up with their everyday lives; and calls on the Government to ensure that every child and young person with cancer is allocated a key worker better to co-ordinate, plan and support every aspect of their support.
