Motion text

That this House, bearing in mind that the Law Commission has provisionally recommended that rape in marriage be recognised legally as a crime, that rape in marriage is already a crime in many other countries, including Scotland, Norway, Sweden, 18 states in the United States of America, several Australian states, New Zealand, Canada, France, Israel, Denmark, the Soviet Union, Poland and Czechoslovakia, and that three surveys have produced the same figure that one in seven married women suffers from the law's failure to protect them from this serious crime, asks the Government to introduce legislation criminalising rape in marriage in this Session.
