Motion text

That this House notes the prediction of the Leader of the Opposition that the Labour Party would achieve a majority of 20 honourable Members following the next general election; recalls the amendment to the Prime Minister's motion (Autumn Statement) tabled by the Right honourable Member for Chesterfield and the honourable Members for Islington North, Bolsover, Tottenham, Newham North West and Hackney South and Shoreditch, together with other honourable Members being in total 25, in which they called for socialist policies including 'major cuts in the arms' budget, the harnessing of the nation's savings, a fair and progressive taxation system...'; and also demanded a restoration of local government democracy, full trade union rights...'; calculates that such a hypothetical Labour Government would therefore rely on the votes of those 25 Right honourable and honourable Members and a further considerable number of left wingers currently amongst the ranks of Labour prospective parliamentary candidates; and calls upon the Leader of the Opposition to explain whether he would capitulate to the pressure of such a group and their demands, or if not, how he proposes to control them.
