ROLE OF RIGOBERTA MENCHU IN GUATEMALA
EDM #227
Tabled 21 November 1991
1991-92 Session
That this House notes the 32 year long armed conflict in Guatemala; welcomes the fact that talks are taking place between the army and the insurgents in the search for a peace agreement; recognises the role that Rigoberta Menchu has played in the search for peace and human rights in her country, working internationally for democracy and demilitarisation; recognises the great personal danger and long years of exile she has suffered during the time of her work; also notes the importance of her work in the United Nations for recognition of the rights of indigenous peoples in her country and the rest of the world; and agrees to support her nomination for the Nobel Peace Prize in 1992.
