Motion text

That this House recognises the sacrifices and bravery of Sikh soldiers in fighting for Britain during the First World War; notes that, although Sikhs made up only two per cent of the population of British India, they formed 20 per cent of the British Indian Army and that 130,000 Sikh soldiers saw active service from the Somme to Gallipoli; and calls for a permanent monument in central London, funded through public subscriptions to highlight Sikh contributions in the Great War, creating visible gratitude in a prime location and honouring the principles of the Sikh way of life and the Sikh soldiers of the British Army in that war.
