Motion text

That this House notes with concern that there have been over 2,000 accidents involving horses and riders on the road since 2011; is saddened to learn that over 36 horse riders have died and that 181 horses have been killed or euthanised following road accidents; further notes that 75 per cent of accidents occur because vehicle drivers attempt to pass without allowing enough space for the horse and rider; and calls on the Government to work with the British Horse Society to raise public awareness of driving safely around horses, to strengthen the provision made in the Highway Code for riders and carriage drivers, to ensure that driving safely around horses is included within the driving test and to consider the introduction of legislation to make the wearing of high visibility clothing mandatory for anybody wishing to ride a horse on the roads.
