Motion text

That this House congratulates Team GB on its stunning success at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games; notes that this is the first time that any country has improved its total medal haul immediately after hosting an Olympic Games; further notes that this is Team GB's best performance on foreign soil, the first time that Great Britain has finished second in the medal table and the best result for Team GB since topping the medal table at the 1908 Olympic Games in London; notes that Team GB achieved gold medals across 15 sports, which is more than any other nation; recognises that this success is in no small part thanks to funding from the National Lottery and a testament to the legacy of the London 2012 Olympic Games for elite sport; calls on the Government to continue to invest in elite sport, but also to recognise that further progress is required to deliver the London 2012 legacy for participation in grassroots sport; further congratulates all of the athletes and staff of Team GB, UK Sport and the sports federations on this triumph; and wishes Great Britain's Paralympians every success at the Paralympic Games in Rio.
