Motion text

That this House expresses its concern and reservations regarding the proposed takeover by Heineken of Punch Taverns; believes such a takeover could potentially stifle the UK's growing local microbrewery industry and limit the choice of domestic beers in pubs, especially at a time when new craft brews and micro-cider products are facilitating the return of local flavours in the beverage market; notes that Heineken already controls some 25 per cent of all UK beer consumption and around 43 per cent of cider consumption; is further concerned that the proposed takeover could see Heineken extend its control over the UK beer market to a significant degree; and asks the Competition and Markets Authority to carefully assess the impact of this takeover on the brewing industry, our pubs and consumer rights and seek assurance for the right of market access for the domestic micro-brewing industry.
