That this House notes that 2017 marks the bicentenary of the birth of Alexander Greek Thomson, one of the great architects of international stature produced by Victorian Glasgow; further notes that Mr Thomson was extremely successful with a large clientele for medium-sized villas and terraces of cottages in Pollokshields, Shawlands, Crossmyloof, Cathcart, Langside, Bothwell and Cove and Kilcreggan; recognises Mr Thomson's works still stand, including Moray Place, Great Western Terrace, Egyptian Halls in Union Street, Grecian Chambers in Sauchiehall Street and his villa, Holmwood; notes that Mr Thomson's work was almost entirely confined to Glasgow and was conspicuous for its originality in producing a distinctive modern architecture from the precedents provided by the Greeks, Egyptians and other ancient civilisations; and pays tribute to the Alexander Thomson Society for dedicating itself to the protection, conservation and promotion of the architect's surviving buildings.
