Motion text

That this House notes with sadness the death of former Celtic captain and manager Billy McNeill at the age of 79; acknowledges the immense contribution he made to football in Scotland, the UK and across Europe during a glittering, trophy-laden career, in which the undoubted highlight was when he captained Celtic to a 2-1 victory over Inter Milan in the 1967 European Cup Final, the first time a team from any of the nations of the United Kingdom had been crowned Champions of Europe; recognises his enormous loyalty to Celtic Football Club for whom he played 820 times in a career that spanned eighteen years between 1957 and 1975, in which as well as the European Cup success, he won nine Scottish League titles, seven Scottish Cups, six Scottish League Cups and made twenty nine international appearances for Scotland; further recognises his achievements in football management with Clyde, Aberdeen, Manchester City, Aston Villa and his beloved Celtic who he managed to a Scottish League and Cup double in the club's Centenary Season in 1987-88; and acknowledges that the man known as Cesar to everyone involved with the club, was indeed Celtic's greatest ever captain and passes its sincere condolences to Billy's wife and family.
