DICK CARABINE - CONTRIBUTION TO THE COMMUNITY OF GOVAN

Motion text

That this House recognises the life and work of Dick Carabine, trade unionist, community campaigner, tireless local champion for the community of Govan for decades and sends condolences to his family at his recent passing; notes that Mr Carabine was an exemplary community activist with a clear local focus who served in the local Tenants Association, Housing Association, and Govan Community Council, where he served as Secretary and Chairperson for over twenty years; remembers the work of this local champion in setting up Govan Community Organisations Council, which in turn established the Govan Law Centre and Youth Information Centre; recognises him as a founder member of Communities United which sought to bring together Govan’s diverse communities and to combat racism and sectarianism; further recognises his work as a Justice of the Peace, a position in which he pursued his duties with diligence over a period of 15 years; further remembers his key involvement in local campaigns to protect services in the Govan area and to monitor the conditions at the local hospitals; and further notes he was respected and valued by everyone who worked with him and who experienced the pride and passion he had for his work and the community of Govan.
