Tabled in the 2017-19 session.

Motion text

That this House notes that 4 June marks the 30th anniversary of the 1989 brutal suppression of peaceful human rights and pro-democracy activists in Tiananmen Square in Beijing in which thousands died or were wounded; recalls that over the last 30 years the Chinese authorities have instigated no public investigation into the events of that day and have forcefully prevented surviving family members from seeking the truth; notes also that for the three decades since the events in Tiananmen Square the Government in China has continued to violate the rights of its people; and urges Her Majesty's Government to press the Government in China to set up an independent investigation into the events of 4 June 1989 to hold accountable those responsible for the killing of unarmed civilians and to end human rights violations in the country.
